Iowa, oh ye of the “heartbeat” bill trend, will forever be associated in our mind with this headline, from 2018, “State family planning services decline 73 percent in fiscal year as $2.5M goes unspent.” YES, Iowa tried to really STICK IT to Planned Parenthood by defunding them and then…. Ended up just defunding 73% of people who needed family planning money.
This headline just perfectly encapsulates how dangerous anti-abortion laws can end up being and the collateral damage that this kinda anti-abortion grandstanding creates!
But here we are again, Iowa, with some next level grandstanding. Iowa is now trying to shoehorn an amendment INTO THE STATE CONSTITUTION that reads (we’re just gonna put the whole thing cuz it’s so… ridiculous):
No right to abortion or required public funding of abortion. To defend the dignity of all human life, and to protect mothers and unborn children from efforts to expand abortion even to the day of birth, we the people of the State of Iowa declare that this Constitution shall not be construed to recognize, grant or secure a right to abortion or to require the public funding of abortion.
This shit has the “up until the day of birth” LIE IN IT! RIGHT IN IT! Also v funny that it’s “to protect mothers” oh yes, u DEF care, just don’t read that first story we linked too about family planning.
The only thing that makes us a little optimistic is THEY CAN’T EVEN PUT IT ON THE BALLOT THIS YEAR! They have to get it approved two consecutive years. That means two, consecutive times groups of adult humans have to read the phrase “abortion even to the day of birth” and be like, dope, this checks out, I want this in our state constitution.
We can only hope… being a normal person will prevail. Those 73% of people not getting their family planning money would prob be like “Don’t hold your breath!”
