Position:  Community Engagement Coordinator

Location:  NYC (our day-to-day work is mostly remote, but this position will require some in-person event preparation and attendance as it is safe to do so)

Reports to: Chief Creative Officer, Programs Director

Status: Exempt; Full Time

Position Summary

Drives the organization’s volunteer cultivation and engagement, coordinates community building events and direct actions, assists in our clinic support programs, and helps to grow our collaborative work with partner organizations.


Essential Responsibilities and Tasks 

  • Determines volunteer needs, coordinates volunteers, and creates opportunities for involvement in AAF’s areas of work including community building & events, clinic support, direct actions, social media, production, advocacy, and grassroots fundraising
  • Engages with existing, new and potential volunteers via email, phone, social media, and in person (as it is safe to do so), and creates and updates volunteer recruitment materials and resources, supporting volunteers to learn and utilize the AAF tone and brand
  • Supports the growth and leadership development of AAF volunteers & partners across the country: plans and facilitates orientations, trainings, and workshops as appropriate
  • In collaboration with Programs Manager, cultivates relationships with partner organizations to create opportunities for collaboration and support of partners’ campaigns
  • Coordinates and supports the growth of AAF’s coalition of small, independent abortion activist groups and supports any working groups and projects that form from it
  • Acts as one of the leads in AAF actions and events online and on the ground, with duties ranging from communicating with partners, coordinating staff and volunteers on site, overseeing set up and take down at events, coordinating and communicating changes in real time during events and actions 
  • Manages and updates volunteer database and other internal tracking systems
  • Assists as needed with clinic support initiatives including research and engagement with vendors, and ordering, organizing in storage, and mailing materials
  • Some travel required (as it is safe to do so), as well as occasional evening/weekend activities

Required Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Ability 

  • Very organized, with strong attention to detail, deadlines, and follow-through
  • Experience in community organizing or progressive campaign work, particularly in planning community events & actions
  • Strong time management, with the flexibility to multi-task and the ability to shift priorities
  • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills
  • Ability to work both independently and as a team with coworkers, partners, and volunteers 
  • Experience working with Salsa Engage or similar CRM/database
  • Some basic design skills (e.g. Canva) a plus

Salary and Benefits

The base salary for this position is 60,000 – 63,000 commensurate with experience and qualifications, with a competitive benefits package.
