Y’all can you believe someone talked about ABORTION on the Golden Globes! We love to see it! Especially because of the incredibly dangerous news last week that frickin’ 207 members of Congress want the Supreme Court to overturn Roe.

Michelle Williams, pregnant and looking stunning, spoke about the importance of family planning

“I’ve tried my very best to live a life of my own making, and not just a series of events that happened to me, but one that I could stand back and look at and recognize my handwriting all over—sometimes messy and scrawling, sometimes careful and precise, but one that I had carved with my own hand. And I wouldn’t have been able to do this without employing a woman’s right to choose: to choose when to have my children, and with whom.”

This is an amazing, destigmatizing moment! And on such a huge stage! And at such an important time! QUEEN!

Of course, the anti-abortion trolls are already writing their angry articles about this. Honestly, it’s beautiful. The Washington Examiner has TWO articles about this speech. STAY MAD! FOREVER! In one the writer is mad at the IDEA that someone would IMPLY that having a baby can hold you back in your career (ummmmmmm, have you READ ANY NEWS STORIES). But also, a lot of women DO have babies and careers and that’s the definition of “having it all” and to argue that that somehow is not INGRAINED in society… but that OH NO THE ABORTION INDUSTRY MAKES EVERY WOMAN BELIEVE SHE HAS TO CHOOSE… is so patently false.

And then that same article has this treat of a sentence, “A woman’s “own self-interest” should never take precedence over the “self-interest” of a baby in the womb.” Man the anti-abortion people… really say the quiet part out loud. “You don’t MATTER!” “Why would the WOMEN matter THEY’RE JUST CARRYING THE THING FOR NINE MONTHS, THEN RAISING IT!”

But one thing we WILL say is that we would ALSO add an addendum to Williams’ (amazing) speech. Or rather, a clarification.

Yes, people should vote pro-choice, vote for candidates that respect them and their bodies. AND your self-interest should be about the good of POC and the community at large. We think there’s something wonderful about believing that it’s in your self-interest to vote to help people! You may never need an abortion! You may be able to afford an abortion and live near a clinic. BUT your self-interest is a society where everyone has abortion access. Because we don’t live in a bubble! And we all rise together. So voting in your self-interest can also mean valuing empathy, valuing others, realizing that helping yourself is as important as helping people who would be HURT if you voted for some asshole.

So: no assholes 2020!
