If you haven’t read Margaret Atwood’s 1985 dystopian novel, The Handmaid’s Tale, now is the time to do it. Not only because it’s coming out as a series on Hulu in April, but more importantly; because it’s very close to becoming a reality for people seeking abortions, especially in Texas.

On Monday, a group of badass chicks dressed like the women from Atwood’s novel, protested in Austin at the Texas State House. They were specifically protesting a bunch of anti-abortion bills going through the Texas legislature including SB 415, which would make second trimester abortions illegal, and SB 25, allowing doctors to withhold medical information to pregnant women.

Here’s what’s scary: SB 415, or the “abortion procedure ban,” passed through the Texas Senate 21-9 and is being sent to the State House to be voted on there. The procedure in question is called a “D & E” or a ‘dilation and evacuation’ and is commonly and SAFELY done in the second trimester of pregnancy. This bill would basically make it illegal to have an abortion after 14 weeks!! NOT COOL TEXAS!

Here’s what’s doubly scary: SB 25, or the “wrongful birth” bill, would keep parents from suing doctors if their child is born with disabilities or abnormalities . This essentially means that anti-choice doctors can withhold critical information about a fetus’ health just because they don’t want a woman to have an abortion! Margaret Johnson, from the Texas League of Women Voters, testified at a senate hearing and told lawmakers, “SB 25 is a not-so-subtle way to give medical personnel the opportunity to impose religious beliefs on women.”

If these bills pass in Texas, it won’t be long until the same bills start passing in YOUR state! So I think we should all follow suit (and cape), put on our Handmaid’s Tale outfits (while we still have the choice) and protest these awful and restrictive bills. It’s time to MESS WITH TEXAS and prevent a fictional dystopian nightmare from becoming a reality!
