Well according to the New York Times we all hate each other, so time to pack it in. Except it… kinda feels like we’ve all banded together more than ever this year, to stand up against the scary erosion of rights threatening states! We appreciate that the Times interviewed so many providers, but maybe think of a better headline than “How a Divided Left Is Losing the Battle on Abortion.”
Let’s be very clear about one thing: there is no compromising on abortion rights. Two: civil debate within the movement is good. Three: WE ARE SO MUCH BETTER THAN THE ALTERNATIVE LITERALLY THE OTHER SIDE WILL SMEAR POOP AGAINST THE WALL AND THE MEDIA WILL BE LIKE “LET’S HEAR BOTH SIDES HERE” BUT WE HAVE A DEBATE ABOUT MESSAGING AND IT’S LIKE “WHY IS THE LEFT DIVIDED?”
Like, ummm…. Let’s take this sentence for instance “”The group says surveys it has conducted in swing states like Arizona and North Carolina show that portraying Democrats as supporters of infanticide — an allegation the left says is patently false — can win neutral voters to their side.” LET’S BE CLEAR: you can just say that this is patently false, NEW YORK TIMES. Come the fuck on. This is not a “matter of opinion” thing. The other side does not have a nuanced or compelling argument. THEY ARE LITERALLY INVENTING SCIENCE AND PUTTING IT IN BILLS. Sorry we occasionally think the wording in a campaign should be more considered.
But one thing the article does highlight is that day to day for independent providers is threatened by these terrifying laws and they don’t have time to wait. While Planned Parenthood does great work, they get more attention in the media and across the country than independent providers. It makes sense: if you know only a passing amount about the fight for reproductive rights, you know Planned Parenthood. Maybe if you’re reading this blog you know more.
Either way, here’s what we want you to do! One: find out about the local provider in your community. Look at how far away it is and think about how far people have to travel for abortions. Volunteer! Offer your support! Two: tell all your relatives who are pro-choice but not really sure where to begin about INDEPENDENT CLINICS!
Abortion Access Front is on the ground throughout the year visiting local clinics! But you know the most about your own community! So lend a hand! And tell everyone about your great local clinic. And if you’re unsure of where to begin there are a lot of great resources at the Abortion Care Network and the National Abortion Federation! We are in this together, we are fighting every day, we will not let up, we will win!
