The Women’s March was a beautiful thing. On the day after the inauguration, millions of women and their supporters raised their voices as one.
And then some asshole trolls chimed in.
Yes, while women took to the streets, some insecure men took their tiny hands to their keyboards and spewed out a toxic combination of hate, vitriol and spelling errors. For those of you who don’t have time to follow dickweeds on twitter, here’s a quick sampling of some of best of the worst:
“In one day, Trump got more fat women out walking than Michelle Obama did in eight years.” This widely shared meme was to misogyny what Ken Bone was to tacky sweaters. Among those who shared it and had to apologize was Indiana State Sen. Jack Sandlin, who said “It’s unclear to me how this ended up on my page, but I have removed it. This message in no way represents my views toward women and I sincerely apologize to anyone who may have seen it.” Sure, Jack.
“Just want to give a heads up to the women! You have rights! A right to cook and a right to clean!.. I suggest you stop your b!tch!ng/protesting during this time. Because you also have a right to get slapped.” Posted to Facebook by Carlsbad, NM City Council member J.P. Deporto. When criticized for the post, Deporto doubled down, saying “you see Donald Trump tweeting every day.”
“If they can afford all those piercings, tattoos, body paintings, signs, and plane tickets, then why do they want us to pay for their birth control?” This is courtesy of Mississippi state Senator Chris McDaniels, whose personality obviously functions as his own birth control.
But the prize for most sustained asshollery goes to the GOP Convention sweetheart, Milwaukee Sheriff David A. Clarke who actually went to the march to pick fights with women! Really! Clarke tweeted: “Several taunted me at Women's riot. I dared those creeps to do something. They knew better & kept it to verbal insults. No cops to be found.” Maybe the lack of cops was due to the TOTAL LACK OF VIOLENCE! (Despite Clarke’s best efforts.)
Still, Clarke later tweeted “What I personally witnessed Sat Jan 21 in DC was a total collapse of the social order.” If by “social order” he means the patriarchy, let’s hope he’s right.
Ugly, but at least men proved they can write more than anti-abortion legislation.
